I would ask, "How do you spell 'Pro'?"

Other questions, "What are your goals when you are working with a client?", "What can a pro do to improve the image of a golf course?", "What is your personal 5-10 year plan for your personal career?"

It would depend on the job that the pro will be doing. Is he/she going to be a teaching pro or a head professional? For head pro: Ask the same types of questions you would if you were hiring any type of manager. Strengths & weaknesses; how he/she would handle a specific scenario; experience with budgeting, merchandising and hiring staff. Most important: customer service skills. For teaching pro, look for experience and credentials. Also, whether the pro is a method teacher. You want someone who teaches to the individual, not someone who tries to get the golfer to fit his/her swing method. Every golfer is different. Someone with back problems cannot swing a golf club the way Tiger Woods can.

In professions that involve 1 on 1 contact with a client and teaching something that is diffcult, fustrating and "odd," the best interview is a sample.

What I mean by this is, take a lesson with him. have him set aside 15-20-30 minutes and give you, the interviewer a lesson. Make him treat you like a client and pay attntion to his temperment, speaking skills, how he demonstrates as well as he provides feedback.

I was the staff manager of strenth and conditioning facility which worked mainly with athletes. When findng new coaches, my bosses (the owners) would have prospective employees do a mini session with me. We would cut out some of the warming up (I would know in advance) and they would have me do some basic (for our profession) exercises. We wanted to see their demenor and if their style would work with us. BTW, they knew who I was. I would also make some common mistakes to se if they caught them and how they would fix them.
