He has just had a painfull wake up call. Was put in hospital with heart trouble last week. Doctors told him he is pre diabetic and he won't make it to 50 if he doesn't change his habits. He is 38 and very overweight. He went home determined to exercise, lose weight and eat healthy food. What things can I say, to help him get through the tough times?

just be honest with him, you don't want to loose him and if he has any family, they will also not want to loose him, its harsh to say i don't want you to die but it's gonna make him think and realise it's not just his life he will affect but others around him who care, some people will never listen no matter what they say especially if they are depressed, just try and have a normal chat ask him if he needs help getting motiveated, the doctors and nurses are always happy to help those who help themselves, it's never to late to change his life around and add more yrs to his life.
he will feel that he cannot achieve what he wants to achieve he needs loads of encouragement, don't let him give in. and just be there for him.

also photos do work, my mum was 23 stone at her heaviest but she was then diagnosed with diabetes, she started to loose weight but she didn't think so, so i dug out an old photo and she actually had trouble beliving it was her, she now weighs about 17stone which is a vast improvement. and she is back at work again which also helped her self asteem.

It may help to ask him to take pictures of himself. That way whenever he is doubting he can just take a look and notice the changes in himself. Very easy and proven confidence booster.

Can you exercise with him? Offer encouragement when he loses weight or you notice positive changes in his behaviour.
