Of course you can resign, but have you spoken with your manager?

It sounds like he/she knows why you're on leave he may offer to hold your job open.

Of course if you're in Australia under the new IR laws, pigs might fly. Sorry had to get that in!

Regardless I hope your wife recovers soon & good on you for taking care of her.

First, I would consider a leave of absence. The government has provided this now without risking your job. I think it allows you to take off for 3 months. This way you can take care of your wife without worrying so much. Second, you can then look for a less stressful job if you choose and at the end of the absence, you can inform them, you won't be able to return.

If you just outright quit. I think you will feel even more stress and pressure in regards to what will you do about paying bills.

You can. But, by resigning while you are out on leave could cost you some benefits that you may have kept while on leave.Think hard before you do anything.
Let them know the situation. Perhaps they can accommodate you at some other position in the company. Good luck.

Course you can, just send in a letter of resignation, then see out your notice period, whether at work or on the sick makes no difference. A lot of people use up thier holiday allowance to cover the notice period, so they don't have to go in to work.

You can resign from any job at any time. No need to give notice just up and go. It's entirely up to you who, when and if you work.

When you resign, the main concern is getting a good recommendation. If you give them enough time to get a replacement, and you have such a legitimate reason, I think it would be quite acceptable.
