It depends.

Really carbonated sodas (such as Coke) - Half-hour to 45 minutes

More calm sodas (such as Sprite or Canada Dry) - 20 minutes

If you drop or shake a can of fizzy pop, tap the base of the can a few times and somehow this takes counteracts the dropping... I don't know if it would work with a bottle r not, but def works with cans...

I would say 20 - 30 minutes to be on the safe side and then open it very slowly

Try this, tap it 5 times on the bottom of the bottle and then open it slowly. You'll get no spray at all. It works with cans!

Aussie3 is right. I tap the top though. Just tap it for a bit and then open it slowly just to be sure but you don't have any nasty sprays. I watched it on this documentary on TV once. It works. I do it all the time.

If its a bottle i wait until all the fizz has settled and open slowly if fizz is foaming up fast i frantically try to close bottle again .
tins i normally wait about 20 secs and face it away from me ,sometimes point it at my husband :)
