can anyone tell me what to expect. The alj judge was not satisfied with my doctor's documentation on my illnesses. He needs more proof before he can grant my disability. I have panic attacks, goraphobia, depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, diabetes, copd, pcos, asthma and chronic bronchitus. Thank you.

When dealing with them (Social Security) the reason they send you for the other exams by their drs is to get their own confirmation that you need disability because they know that sometimes the person's physician could be trying to do anything to get a person on it even if they don't need it. It's to prevent against abusing the system.

The exam can take about 20 minutes for the physical exam so that they can determine if you need it by checking your ability to move and such.

I can't answer on the psych evaluation other than to say that often time they will send the person for one if the medical records from other drs say anything about the possibility of the patient being depressed.

Hope that this is of some help.

I've gotten much of this info from others who have applied for disability thru SS.

go to nolo.com and read up, and check their book out from the library, on social security disability. It's a great book, tells you everything. They are a bunch of lawyers who write self-help books, and their books are terrific. The main thing is that often disabled people try to look on the bright side of things, to help cope (and a positive attitude obviously does help) but you want to tell social security how you really CAN'T cope. You may end up crying over the whole deal and being depressed for several days after, but they need to hear how your life is hard.

I think everybody gets an outside exam, like the first answerer said, to keep the system honest.

Make a list of your symptoms, medications and the treatments you have received. You should be referred to a psychiatrist through your doctor, and the session may take up to an hour. Bronchitis can be assessed through a breathing test at the hospital, where they have a machine that measures lung performance. You will need to be examined by a departmental appointed doctor; bring your inhaler, other medications and all reports, etc.
