Can I use bactrim antibiotic for a tooth infection or penicillin for a bladder infection. Basically I had a tooth infection but its gone now, I have a bladder infection. I have run out of one antibiotic but have a lot of the other. So in the interim, can I use either and would they be equally effective?

and yes I realize I have to replace good bacteria in the gut that is lost when taking antibiotics, so I am taking acidophilus too.

Bactrim is not the best choice for oral infections, but it will help a little bit. If you just can't get to the dentist, at least it wouldn't hurt anything to try.

This is not a good idea. Oral infections are caused by certain bacteria (mostly Gram +) that respond well to Penicillin, Amoxicillin, Clindamycin etc. UTI's are caused by completely different bacteria (mostly Gram -) like E. coli. Taking an antibiotic for the wrong reason is a great way to develop bacterial resistance to that antibiotic. Would you like to grow bacteria in you urinary tract that are resistant to the Bactrim?? And don't even get me started as to why you have bottles of Bactrim laying around. Drugs do lose their potency over time and taking them when you shouldn't be taking them or taking less than a full course is as I said earlier, a great way to develop resistant bacteria.

Not a good idea. Try rinsing your mouth with peroxide often, or use a decent mouth wash frequently to kill the infectious germs, and get it down into the affected area with your tooth brush or floss. You can also use a milder peroxide for oral use that is suspended in glisterine, found in the oral care section. You can apply a few drops of that onto the affected area and let it fizz up before rinsing and re-applying it. If the infection doesn't subside in a day or so, see a dentist.

Um no, do u know that your toothache is caused by a bacteria infection??? just take a pain med (motrin, oragel or something to soothe the pain) and wait for your appointment or if the pain is unbearable i am sure they can accommodate you. But i wouldn't recommend taking antibiotics.

Usually sulfa drugs are used for bladder infections. Bactrim is used to treat infections such as urinary tract infections, bronchitis, ear infections (otitis), traveler's diarrhea, and bacterial infections. So it wouldnt do any good to mix and match really. Pennicillin really will not help it.
