Me and my fiance don't want to get married for awhile (dont wanna rush things ya know), and we're not really interested in having a "traditional wedding" (i.e. church, tons of guests, reception), we either want to get married at a courthouse or just do the commonlaw thing. But is it still around nowadays?

Yes it is but only in certain states is it recognized. Not only do you have to be living together, you need to be calling each other husband and wife and filing taxes as though you are married.

This link will tell you what states still recognize it and what the requirements are to be recognized as a common law marriage.

Yes it's still around and the rules for it are different in each state. In Texas all you have to do is 1. Call eachother husband and wife to other people. 2. Live together as man and wife. 3. I forgot 3 but it's easy, file joint tax return or something.

i know that it is in Virginia, but in order to be considered common law married, you have to have lived together for at least 7 years, and refer to each other as this is my husband george, thisis my wife anne...etc. i'm not sure about other states, but i know that virginia is the most morthern state that drecognises commonlaw marriage, at least on the east coast.

it really does depend on the state.

Look up your state on this table, and if you are in a state the recognizes common law marriages, and you have been "living" as husband & wife for a long enough period of time (several years...depends on your state), then your marriage will be recognized in all other states.
