First of all, as a veteran and a US citizen, I'd like to say thanks and congratulations. Serving your country is a wonderful and necessary experience, and builds character.

As far as extremist anti-American people such as celeste who answered this question, pay no mind. They hate the United States and freedom, and want to wait until the US is attacked with nukes or biological weapons before action is taken.

Push-ups, sit-ups, and running will be the best type of conditioning you can do, as these will be the most common types of PT (physical training) you will be doing in basic. If you cannot do a lot right now, don't worry. Do just a few at a time to begin with several times a day...more will come in time.

Another important thing you will need to do is to learn the ranks. You can find them on the Army's web site. DO NOT ever call an NCO (non-comissioned officer) sir. An NCO is a Corporal or Sergeant on up in the enlisted ranks. If you see a First Sergeant or Sergeant Major address them as 'First Sergeant' or 'Sergeant Major" and not just sergeant. These people have been around the block and are as squared away as it gets, and have earned the utmost respect, the least of which is addressing them appropriately. Referring to an NCO as 'Sir' or 'Maam' is often taken as an insult.

Address all officers as 'Sir' or 'Maam'. You will learn the appropriate way to salute them in basic.

Good luck....if you have any more questions about anything feel free to e-mail me.

Absolutely correct on the push-ups, there soldier. Secondly, if you can, buy a BRAND new pair of socks before you go there. THESE WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND before you know it; they probably wont let you keep them once you get there, but go ahead and try anyway. Also, do not bring a bunch of stuff; bring as little as possible. Its less stuff to drop or lose when youre getting yelled at by a bunch of drill sergeants over the course of a few days time. Prepare for drinking lots and lots and lots and LOTS of water. Might as well train on that too. Running is always a good endurance tester. Learn your general orders of a sentry before you get there too because you will be tested every single day before you graduate boot camp and you might as well learn it, love it and move on. Also, dont plan on tasting anything in boot camp because you have about 2 mintues to eat, LITERALLY- and dont think Im joking. Three times a day, you will cram down everything you possible can because you are SO hungry. Turn everything into a sandwich, trust me it saves time. Lastly, hope you arent squeemish about needles. Good luck!!!!

Do push ups (use good form), sit-ups (as many as you can do until you can't get up), run, and hike in leather boots. If you don't get your feet in shape, you will have huge blisters...ouch. Most of all, focus on having a good attitude. Realize that this is something that you have to do and just do what they say. Act like you love it. Even when it gets crazy, it can be fun if you accept the role of a trainee. They will ask you to do things that are easy, things that are hard, and things that are impossible. Give your best effort to accomplish each one and then listen to their feedback. Then, DRIVE ON to the next mission. You will see that you will improve at everything you do.

push ups- and they have to be standard military- no knees, no stopping, and your arms must be bent to a 90degree angle.

situps- hands behind your head.

jogging- at least two miles, although you will "ruc-march" (sp?) longer than that, (that means a quickstep march with a heavy pack on your back.) So, I would get out there and try to to work my way up to an hour of jogging.

pull-ups/chin-ups (there are none on the pt test, but I am pretty sure that you have to do them in basic).

Good luck and thank you for your service.

Don't worry about pushups because you will do a milliion of them in boot...the most beneficial exercise you could do is endurance training like running etc. LOTS of it - I'm serious...as much over 20 miles/week and you can do.

When I was in basic we did push ups.
then we did more push ups.

then we marched. A lot. EVERYWHERE.. in August... in Kentucky.

Then we did more push ups.

We ran a lot.

We marched some more... in the rain. Lots of rain.

Then we did more push ups.

Sometimes we did jumping jacks, or sit ups... sit ups are part of the pt test so you do a lot of them.

But mostly we did push ups...

and march.

and march,

and march.

(It was easier to march us around than arrange for buses).

and push ups.

Push ups, sit ups, running, mountain climbers, jumping jacks. Do not listen to the negative people, they like their freedoms, they just want someone else to pay for it. Kind of like healthcare!
