I have studied various martial arts for many years but have not studied knife fighting in particular. I do not need fancy techniques but am looking for instruction with sound principles of knife work. I do not have a lot of money to waste so please suggest only that which you have direct knowledge of.
Thanks

Try the Marine Corp martial Art Program. You may be able to check out the site, being a civilian, I don't know. I strongly suggest this program for any Martial art lover. This stuff is not for the beginner, it's meant for disciplined people. They cover everything knife fighting techniques, grappling, boxing, fire arm retention, disarmament, joint manipulations, the list goes on.The program is designed for military so there will be some things that will be of little use to civilians. They have a website and instructional step by step videos. If you can't get access to the videos e-mail me through this site and I'll thy to help you out.

recently I watched a knife fighting DVD called knife disarming from the Russian style 'systema'. tried to work out some of the principles and techniques with a wooden and unsharp metal blade and found it quite useful. As is said somewhere i the vid. In a knife fight there's no winning just surviving.

Knife fighting is really messy, even a winner in a knife fight is likely to be cut badly.

I would look for instruction from a person who has REAL experience in the field. They will probably have scars on their hands and arms.

I don't know man, I have studdied martial arts for about 15 years and have never been able to learn much of anything off a video. Closest thing I ever got was pressure point strikes but even then I found out I was doing much wrong when I finally got to study with live instructors. Isn't there somewhere you could take a Seminar where you live? Maybe you could do some research and find someone local who practices the art. I know from past experience that I have often been able to train on various occassions from free with someone who might just be looking for a partner to help them practice.

I recommend learning kali, it is mainly filipeano weopons training, and is fairly simple and effective. And here's the best part, I believe that there is a free 51 min vid that you can down load at http://www.totalvid.com

You need an instructor to teach you, this cannot be learned from a video or book.
