He has such sharp claws and I have cuts all over my arms from where he climbs on me. I want to know the best way to clip them and whether a Rainbow Lorikeet can survive with not-so-sharp claws?

I'd take her to your groomer first, to let them show you the proper length to cut them.

Birds have little veins, and so any blood loss is a lot to them. If you cut too close, you could drain her blood and kill her.

I keep pepper on hand for trimming bird nails. If the nail is too short, I stop it with pepper, most of the time.

I hope this helps.

If you don't know how to clip parrot nails and don't have the correct equipment take the bird to an avian vet. My lories get their beaks, wings and nails done 2-3x a year. Depending on the vet and what you have done it shouldn't be more than $25. Your bird should get regular check-ups anyway.
You can give him ONE sanded perch which will help the sharpness a little. (other perches should be branches) But in captivity the nails tend to get very long. I've never had a problem with sharp except on my very little babies.

Yes you can cut them, no you shouldn't do it yourself if you've never seen it done. Take them to the vet and stay to watch exactly how they do it, most are happy to teach you.

Till then you can use a nail file to take the points off so they aren't so sharp. Do be very carefull when holding the bird for this kind of thing, easiest if someone else holds it while you do the fileing or cutting, But never hold it tight on the chest. If the bird can't move it's chest freely it can't breath.

NOOOO you can not do that if you cut your birds claws to deep they can bleed and he can die from it!
I take my bird to the vet and get them filed every once in a while
it doesn't hurt them they just take a little round sand paper type thing and it only takes a few seconds and it is only about 5 or 10
bucks and some vets do it for free.

Good luck!

It is very had to clip black nails.. Unless you have done this before DONT!!! You need to give you guy some nature perching. You can use an embrey board on the nails. But he may not like you after it.. Just a few rubs with the embrey board (for nails) is all that is needed.

short neat nails are nice and also neat. I dont like long nails because dirt can get under these and it look nasty
its digusting and gross when somebodys nails tend to be all chewed up to the ending.
