Intravenous antibiotics are the course of treatment for bacterial meningitis. However, the class of antiobiotics used depends on the type of meningitis that you have because there is more than one type of bacterial meningitis (meningococcal, cryptococcal, pneumococcal, etc.)

Antibiotics used depend upon the bacteria and their sensitivity. Usually, ceftriaxone (3rd generation cephalosporin) is used, as most of the meningitis- producing bacteria are sensitive to it. Other treatment includes dexamethasone to prevent complications like deafness and anticonvulsants for fits. Antipyretics are given for fever. Intravenous fluids are given if necessary. Supportive treatment also includes tube feeding if required and change of posture to prevent bed sores.
