It is not uncommon. The stomach is sliding up into the chest cavity thru the diaphragm. Prilosec, protonix, etc there are quite a few meds that block acid production in the stomach.. This helps because the stomach contents back up into the hernia.. Especially when you lie down at night. Eat your evening meal several hours before going to bed, elevate the head of the bed even 6 inches, chew your food thoroughly, and eat slowly, no spicy foods late in the day. If the stomach contents back up the esophagus when you are asleep, you will wake up coughing. If the acid content is high it will burn the lungs and give you quite a coughing fit. Also you can wind up with pneumonia. If not too acid, the coughing won't be as bad. Also the continued acid irritation of the lower end of the esophagus can be associated with cancer of the esophagus. It heartburn gets too bad, surgery can be done. There can be some nasty complications from surgery tho.

a hiatal hernia is the stomach or part of the stomach protruding up through the diaphram. It can cause some serious problems such as iscemia. which is the death of tissue based on decrease circulation. The statement that almost everyone has one is not true although it is not uncommon. if it is sever or is causing sever symptoms i can and should be surgically corrected.
