I can understand your question. I felt the same way when i first came here. Maybe they do appear unhappy or depressed to us. However, i bleieve that is just because ot the physical appeartance of their natural look. The CHinese do withold thier emotions being good or bad. I have been here in China since May of 2006. I find that most of the people here are very happy. It is a pleasure to watch the famililies at a food establishment. All have smiles and are laughing. The Chinese are generally a happy people. I am married to a wonderfuyl woman here and we do a lot of laughing and smiling. So looks can be decieving my friend. Come here and see for yourself

Chinese are just as depressed and as unhappy looking as you are. Sometimes the way you view other people is exactly the way you are feeling, don't you know that? For me, I see a lot of smiling faces, and have been seeing that for the past 20years. Not sure if rice and dog can be that effective, if this is true, you should be awarded for your discovery. Such a clever person you are and what a happy pair of parents you have made them.

Is it worth answering? Hmmm...I got nothing better to do right now, between two flights on my way back from China...
First, rice is good for you. You should eat more of it. And many Chinese eat more noodles than they eat rice actually. Noodles are also good for you by the way, Marco Polo said so and the Italians understood it very quickly. Dog is also good for you, you should try it, but the vast majority of Chinese in most provinces and regions, in China or elsewhere in Asia, do not eat dog. It is rarely seen on the menu of restaurants, and not readily available in supermarkets or food stores, except in Guangdong province and a few other cities.
As far as looking depressed or unhappy, I find the vast majority of people to be happy, even in times of hardship. Without generalizing, the character of the Chinese as a group is quite remarkably happy and gentle. Chinese have simply other ways of showing happiness in public. They will usually be more reserved, although their concept of privacy in public is different from ours, but not better or worst. Other answerers are right when they talk about laughter when families and friends get together to celebrate an occasion or simply to share a good meal together. Sharing a meal with Chinese is in itself a lesson on conviviality. And by the way, living conditions in China have greatly improved and without minimizing the importance of poverty in the countryside, the standard of living of the majority of Chinese could be advantageously compared to that of many so-called developed countries. The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence, but most of the people I know there (I`m not talking about rich Chinese but normal folks like school teachers, office and store clerks, taxi drivers) are better off there than their counterparts in the US, Canada and other western countries.

What Chinese people have you been seeing? I see a lot of happy Chinese people. Even people working in the most menial jobs here can be seen chatting and laughing with their co-workers or family. It's not your culture or ethnicity that makes you depressed and unhappy, it's how you deal with what life gives you. Chinese people are very good at making "lemonade from lemons." The school I work at puts a lot of pressure on it's Chinese teachers, yet anytime they have a spare moment they are laughing, playing, and joking around.

your question makes you sound ignorent. chinese people are normal people just like you. they don't normally have it as easy as americans. they work hard for what they get. they have the same feelings as anyone else, the same things make them happy as you. i've spend 10 weeks here and i think the chinese people are friendly, helpful, hard working and have better family values than anyone i have ever met. as far as rice and dogs, america throws away enough food to feed china every day, what a waste, no wonder america is on it's way down.

That's really ignorant. The chineese were mapping the stars, creating mathematics, tools, art, so much more while the rest of civilization was in the dark ages or living in caves. You should really read more about the culture before speaking about then. No I am not chineese, but I can read and see beyond myself.

It's time to change your cheap contact lenses. That's the reason misleads you and keeps you so far away from the clear picture.
