i'm going to try to do the extension from a stage in an auditorium out into 1st 3 rows of the crowd

You would build a platform the same height as the stage extending out into the audience. If you have non-moveable seats, your platform would also have to clear them.

What you are trying to do is build a small thrust stage (a stage that is surounded by seats on 3 sides and propels out beyond the percenium arc). If the seats are moveable remove them first then build off of the stage at the same height as the stage itself. How you build it is going to depend on what you are alowd to do (can you put nails in the floor to make it sturdy? etc.) You should also do a bit of home work as far as how wide and long a runway should be. You may not be makeing it long enough at only 3 rows and may be waisting your time. You could save yourself a world of trouble by using the stage itself and makeing sure that your models all walk the same straight line (use colored tape to mark the walk way).
