If her mom is 85, then she was a teenager in the 1930/1940s, the depression era. Any kind of extravegance probably won't sit well with her. She's used to simping and saving. But she probably appreciates good memories and stories, so I would suggest seeing if you can't locate some of her friends - especially one's she hasn't heard from, and then write/call them (or their families). See if she can't get ahold of some photos of places she's lived, things she used to do, and other happy memories. Break out the old 8MM films of the kids growing up, or the photo albums. Ask her to tell you happy stories and have a tape recorder handy to record them. Treat her to a beauty salon manicure and pedacure, or have her hair done, then take her for a drive from Roseburg to Steamboat on Highway 138 and look at all the old farms and barns. Have the memorabila set up and the letters from her friends (and their kids) waiting for her at the Streamboat Inn. Contact Sharon Van Loan and Pat Lee in advance and they will be sure to help with the planning.

"During the daytime, the Inn is not only a gathering place for fishermen, but for tourists and locals who savor "honest home cooking." The daytime restaurant offers an early dinner special for those not attending the later Evening Dinner."

To follow it up, take her on a visit to the historical museum at the fairgrounds, or bop over towards the coast and take in the new museums in Myrtle Point and Coquille. Remember, her birthday is about her, not what she has for dinner. The rest of the day and the weeks that follow should make it a birthday she won't forget.
