I need some advice. I've recently been feeling very sad. I think it's depression and I'm not sure how to tackle it. I know it's not a genetic thing. It's entirely environmental. I've made lifestyle changes over the past months. I want to set my life back on track WITHOUT medication. Here are some possible causes:

This is my first year in college.
I've just started drinking alcohol and I drink semi-regularly.
I'm having trouble my classes.
I have a negative body image (despite the fact I have been told I'm very pretty).
I haven't been eating as well as I did at home.
For college, I moved over 2000 miles away and I don't keep up regularly with my family.
I am very irritable and sometimes mean to my friends.
I feel guilty over everything.
I just had to move out of my old room because of roommate problems.
I've had to help my friends through rough times.
I don't feel as confident as I did last year.
I'm single and always have been.

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Ob,
First year in college and thousands of miles from home is no doubt a hard and stressfull time for even the bravest of hearts!! Everything your feeling and experiencing is going to be more intense during this time. Just the fact of you wanting to tackle this time without meds is a sign of your resoluteness!! And Great job first of all on making it to College!! Your headed in the right direction!! No doubt that certain seasons in life are harder than others. If these feelings of yours last for a significant period of time I would suggest talking with your local General Practitioner or your Fam Doc about it. Tell him or her everything you are feeling. Some people need meds at certain times in life and some dont. If you do rest assured many many "normal" people need meds at certain times in life sweety. If you dont, at this time, I promise things do get easier sweety!!
God Bless you!!

I'm sure your college has help for students with problems like yours! It could very well be a situational type of depression, but with symptoms liket he negative body image and feelings of guilt, there is probably more to it than just moving away from home and going to school! See what resources your school offers, be it counselling or whatever, but don't automatically poohpooh the idea of medication! It doesn't have to be 'genetic' to have a physical cause, and medication combined with counselling might be just what you need. At any rate.. no one here can tell you for sure.. see a professional for evaluation.

any sort of depression can be tide over by faith in GOD and sincere prayer.

Your prayer is from your heart. Further You must have to understood the fact that God is present in our heart. This can be realised in meditation. Further we are the creation of our own destiny. As per Hindu sacred religion, we carry all good and bad deeds life after life. There is no end unless we pray for unification of self with the divineliness.
Hence there is always a possible way to complete mergence with God in this life by a simple and wonderful meditation

My friend experienced a same situation like you while we were in UK studying, some 10000 miles from home. She end up moving home and temporarily stopped her course for about six months...

This happens usually when the transition is too much to bear, having been with your loved ones all these years.

Regroup, rest, and recharge before making a decision.

You seem to have typical college issues. loneliness, boredom, probably financial stress too? We all have/had that. It will get better. Try reading the Bible for comfort and reassurance. You mentioned that you do not like medication or wish to it, but St. John's Wort for $3.86 a bottle at Walmart is really all natural and excellent. I've never had a problem with it.

keep in contact with your family or the people you love thats important when you are so far away from home...if people tell you are pretty listen....they are proberly right.....theres nothing wrong with single it gives you time to work on you...take some time out to do things you enjoy....make a to do list and stick to it for school so you dont get behind....eat right and do a bit of exersise or perhaps a yoga class to learn to relax..start loving yourself and ....being postive...talk to the school counsellor or speak to a doctor...you will get there just put you first

The biggest problem I think you have is GUILT!!! That will eat you up. You just have to forgive yourself!!
