4years is a long time. you will have to sit him down and have a talk. tell him how you feel and why you want this yes you might hurt him but what else can you do at the end of the day life dose go on or better still tell him you want a break about a year or so then things might start to drift apart and then you both go your own ways or you might miss him and want to start again only you can pull the trigger on this one me i would go for the second option it gives you a break and you are not really hurting any one much then you get to find out what you really want. love is a powerful thing but so is happiness also ask your self why don't your family like him as he done something for them to judge him on this.

There is nothing you can say to him without hurting him, rejection is the one thing every human being fears. I would have you be honest and open to him about how your feeling and come to some sort of common ground with the relationship. This subject should have been talk about before is went on to long. God Bless and Good Luck.

After a 4 year relationship, he's going to be a little hurt, but be as nice as possible about it, I suppose. Be completely honest. He will be more hurt if you keep things from him, and lead him on for longer then you have honest intentions.

If he cares about you, you'll hurt him. Minimize the hurt by telling him firmly but gently that you feel your life must now take you in a different direction than his. Then don't hang around and prolong the agony, but make a clean break and move on.

Give this man some credit. If you are unhappy I can only imagine how miserable he must be.How do you know that he dont feel the same and wants to spare your feelings.Dont let this continue your only makin it more difficult to love anyone. You must be very young or mean.I feel for both parties involved

well there is no good/right way of telling him without someone getting hurt, be honest and then maybe you will feel better after a month or so. and dont give him the old "it's not you its me" or crap like like only talk to him if you are ready for the truth

Are you in love with him or not!? If not, he's probably not happy either but is just trying to be good to you. Tell him it is over. He may jump for joy.

You can't say it without hurting him.. It's 4 years, unless he's a complete schmuck. Just tell him how you feel, simple really.

What do your family's opinions have to do with this? You know him a LOT better than they do.
