Three piece slate is the only slate which is guaranteed by the slate mines not to warp. So if your looking into buying a pool table make sure it has this.

I'm not trying to be a pool snob or anything like that, but would never get anything LESS than a 4 X 8 slate because it would be a total waste of money. Those other tables warp and they don't play well. The rails usually suck badly. Obviously, the best table is a 4.5 X 9 with slate. But those are usually used around $800 and up. I've seen a few 4 X8 on craigslist for around $500, so I'd really try to shop and be patient, or just buy him an IPOD or something else. I just don't think you'll be happy with after playing on it for several hours.

Slate doesn't warp, but the wooden framework might if exposed to moisture. Dad has a table from the 40's and with new felt, it would look better than the new ones built today. They'll last a lifetime if you take care of them.

if you take care of the table it should last many years. We frequently play on a table that is 40 years old and looks brand new because it has been taken care of
