I'm always hearing english words in Japenese songs and stuff. Is that just modern day western influence? I can't immagine latin-based words being present in an eastern language. Do they just *sound* like english words?

Yes, English phrases and words are just a trendy thing to put in songs in Japan.
There are however, some words that Japan has borrowed from English, like "keeki" means "cake", but the words you hear in songs are typically directly from English.

Anything that is a modern thing like the radio or television is spoken much like the english word. TV is terebi . Any names of places are also said in the English way as there are no Japanese words to describe them. Camera is basically said kamera and radio is rajio. Department store is also a modern thing so that is said Depato. Obviously there characters are written in Japanese but this is how they sound when said.

There are Japanese songs whose lyrics are entirely, or interspersed with English.
So, no you're not crazy, those likely are not Japanese words that would normally be written with hiragana or kanji that you're hearing.

I think it's definitely western influence.
