the metal inside my piercing? My tragus piercing looks like it's slightly bruised and it's looked that way for quite awhile. I got it done 6 months ago so it should be relatively healed. My helix piercing is swollen and sore constantly. Although there is no pus secreting and no sign of infection. I was pierced with surgical steel which I've read can contain a small amount of nickel which I'm highly allergic to. If this is an allergic reaction, what is recommended I do?

If you're allergic to nickel you'd be better off not getting piercings and removing the ones you have. The will remain sore indefinitely when an allergy is present. As long as there is metal in contact with your skin it will be sore. Bummer but true!

When I first got my ears pierced, I could were any kond of earrings in them. Then after about 6 monyhs, they started to get red, sore, hot to touch and swollen with some clear drainage. I had developed an allergy to the surgical steel. That was over 30 years ago and I can only wear gold earrings since then and they have to be the 20-24 carat gold ones or I get sores within a half an hour of putting them in my ears. I also have developed an intolerance to some watches since then. Once you have an allergy to one substance, it is not unusual to develop other related allergies as you are exposed to the new materials. Since you are already aware that you are allergic to nickel, it is very likely that you may have other metal allergies as well.

It could be an allergic reaction or it could be an infection. You could try coating your helix piercing with Neosporin once or twice daily to see if it helps. If you are allergic to the nickel, it could definitely be a reaction to it. The first thing to do is stop the contact of anything nickel against your skin. You may have to consult a dermatologist and get a prescription if it does not get better. It will be worth the visit.

When cheaper jewellery is made, the silver is replaced with nickle which reacts with everybody's skin. The bruising is probably just black off the jewellery - I have found this happens on my skin aswell. Your best bet would be to change the jewellery to one that doesnt contain nickle and see if it heals up from there
