For musical theater "literacy",

-West Side Story
-Cabaret
-Chicago
-Annie (but hopefully you've already seen that, because that's children standards lol)
-Oliver!
-The Music Man
-Fiddler on the Roof
-My Fair Lady
-Guys & Dolls

also, most Andrew Lloyd Webber (a few to name: Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Cats) and Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods) shows are a big impact on theater today, and ALL Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals.

Jekyll and Hyde.
Wicked.
Lion King.
Beauty and the Beast.
The Wizard of Oz.

It really depends on your style. For example, Wizard of Oz is a much older and more classical musical. Everyone knows it. Ont he other hand, Wicked is much newer and faster paced. Jekyll and Hyde has amazing music, as does The Lion King.

Spring Awakening. It's very smartly done. The music is good and the cast is young and energetic. It's a little risque so make sure that kids are older teens if you're concerned about this kind of thing.
