I know this one, the area balds and looks reddish. Take to vet ASAP for special cleanser, oinment, and antibiotics otherwise could spread to entire body if not treated and it's contagious. And will be stinky.

Dogs don't usually get ear mites, unless they live in close contact with cats that have mites. Treating for mites in a pet that does not have then can cause secondary problems.
Both ear mites and ear infections can have thick brown debris.
You're more likely seeing an ear infection, which will need to be evaluated by your vet as to the type (bacterial, yeast, or both) and medication and ear cleaner prescribed.
Ear infections are painful, so the sooner you see the vet the better. If you can't get to a vet for a bit, you can purchase a NON MEDICATED ear wash from the pet store and flush the ears (by filling the canal with solution, massaging at the base of the ear, then wiping dry with cotton balls) once a day until you can get an appointment (don't clean the day before or of appointment).

Ear mites will look like thick brown waxy stuff in the ears. The dog will normally shake the head a lot and scratch at the ears. They are a mite and irritate the ears. You can carefully use a Qtip to clean right inside and take a look.

If no brown wax, but ear is red and inflammed, sour smell. flaky raw looking areas that is probably a yeast infection. That takes a different treatment from ear mites. Yeast infection common in long eared dog. Moisture gets trapped down inside the ear from bathing or being outside, set up yeast.

Ear mites can now be treated with OTC solutions found at better pet stores. Depending on how bad/how long it can take a few weeks of treatment. Yeast infection of ears a little harder to treat and really should be seen at vet. A dog can sometimes have both, more common in outside dogs, hounds, beagles, bassetts, etc.

Obviously, if in doubt and to be careful, call your vet's office.

The dog will scratch the ears a lot and shake his head. If you take a Qtip or cotton ball and wipe out the ear you will get black or brown residue. You can sometimes use a Qtip and swirl around the ear and actually come up with an ear mite. There are lots of treatments you can order on the Internet that work well. Walmart and pet warehouse has several lotions. Sometimes the Vet will want to do the cleaning and flushing out if the ears are really infested. Don't be afraid to clean out a dog's ear. You can get pretty far in and it is still safe for the dog. Olive oil on cotton pads will get rid of a lot of the discharge, then you can squirt in the ear mite lotion. Best of luck to you and your dog!!

The dog will usually tend to paw at their ear and may shake their head, and will often cry when the ear is touched. If you look into the ear, you will usually see a dark substance in there from the mites and dried blood in the ear canal.

the dog will scratch around it's ears and shake its head around. sometimes it will rub its ears against the furniture and the ground. if there is a severe infection, the ears will bleed and you will be able to see dried blood inside your dog's ears [it will be dark, not red] ear mites also increase the amount of ear wax your dog produces.

ear mites are common, but they can damage your dog's ear canal and hearing. they can also spread to other parts of the dogs body, to other dogs, cats, and even to humans.

If you see your dog shaking his head and scratching his ears excessively, increased earwax, or if there is an abnormal odour emanating from his ears or thick, black crusty ear discharge, he may be suffering from ear mites. Your dog may need to see a veterinarian for treatment.
