A question for cheerleaders...specificly juniour high cheerleaders!?
I REALLY love any kind of dancing but I always had this special interest in cheerleading for a very long time. So I've decided and reserched almost everything I need to know about cheerleading but I never found anything specificly on the flier in cheerleading, that's the spot I want to be. I am asking for some information on what the flier does in a routine/practice and how to prepare myself to be one? How many pushups/situps should I do daily? And what types of jumps, kinds of splits, and stunts should I know about and how to learn them corectly? Thanks.

As a coach, i can tell you that we look for specific qualities in our flyers.

First and foremost is balance and flexibility. To be a flyer, you must be able to do a heal stretch, liberty and arabesque and hold each one of these for 20 full seconds. This shows us that you have the poise and balance to do the stunt once lifted.

Ideally, you will be small framed...but this is not necessarily the case based on what your other team mates are able to lift. I currently have 4 bases that are able to lift a 125 pound girl.

As a flyer, you will be the focus of a stunt....which means you have to be perfect. No bobbles or wobbles and full of energy.

I would suggest that you strengthen your core. Pilates is great. see if your local gym offers a class. If they don't, they might offer a cheer gymasts class. They can help you with form in tumbling and jumps as well as core strengthening.

Some exercises that come to mind are butterflies, stradle and v-ups and lunges. All of these will strengthen your muscles and prepare them for many of the jumps.

Jumps: As a minimum you should know how to do a herkie, hurdler and toe touch. I often have my girls learn this on a trampoline before attempting on the ground.

Splits: You should be able to do at least one type of split. We try to have our girls do all 3 if possible.

Stunts: This is something that your coach will guide you through during practices. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS BY YOURSELF!

I often have girls video cheerleaders during a game. This allows them to take the tape back home and practice at their own pace...starting and stopping when needed. You will also see proper form and technique performed and can slow the video down in many instances to see just where the feet and hands are during each stage of a stunt.

Hope that helps!

Well the only way to learn that stuff is witha proper cheerleading coach. If your going to be a flyer you have to be really small....you should be flexable and have no extra muscle or fat. However you should be in good shape and have good core strength. You cant teach yourself this stuff though u need a coach.
The flier does basic gymnastics, dance, cheering and is usually at the top of formations or what ever else you do.

Fliers need to be bendy, seeing as they do flips and such in the air. Just work strengthening legs, abs, and arms, so running, crunches, curls, etc. will help. If you have any fear of heights, or any trust issues, get over them now!! Since you want to be a flier there's not much you can do alone... it takes a few girls to get you up in the air to practice. Balance is big... you'll have to keep your nails trimmed so you don't claw anyone's face up on accident. Good luck!!
