Silver nitrate (in fact, any nitrate) is a water soluble salt-- in water it dissociates into an equimolar solution of Ag+ and NO3- ions. If there is a more than a negligible amount of chloride (Cl-) ion present, then AgCl (a white salt) will precipitate out of solution. This is because AgCl is fairly insoluble in water. You determine whether such ions will unite to precipitate a solid by looking at the salt's Ksp (solubility product constant).

More generally and quantitatively, substitute the dissolved ion concentrations into the equilibrium constant expression to compute Qsp, the reaction quotient:

If Qsp < Ksp, then the ions will remain solvated (dissolved).
If Qsp > Ksp, (some of) the solid will precipitate out of solution.

Equilibrium is reached when conditions are such that Qsp = Ksp.

Hope this helps!

If there are any Cl ions in solution, the addition of silver nitrate will cause white silver chloride (AgCl) crystals to form. The compound is not soluble in water (one of the few metal chlorides that isn't) and is more than 5x as dense, so the particles will rapidly settle to the bottom.

Gah; i do not want the Tokio Hotel family to end... at all. Honestley, how many people do you see that have things, where they ask questions and answer questions about a band daily; and class each other as a family? Like "Jonas Brothers family" Or "Miley Cyrus family?" (Sorry i used an example, but there fairly often asked about) Now, back to the point. There is no one else doing this, except us. And i would honestley hate to see this fall apart. We have gotten so so far in this; and we have all gotten to know each other so well..And to have fall apart..I just dont want to imagine it happening. If Monika wants to leave, i honestley understand where she is coming from and I agree with her 100% There are some question's here that are being asked..that dont make no sense, but other then those questions; there fairly alright. And i would hate to see everyone else leave, and for this to fall apart. And i dont even want to see Monika leave aswell; she had such great answer's and questions, im going to miss it <3 I think we should take a step back and see how far we have gotten. I dont particulary know when the "Tokio Hotel family" started; but i do no the day i joined. It was in April, and we were a pretty small group..But the small group grew into something so much bigger, and as a family we accepted every single one into the group. Now people are claiming that they want to leave because its gotten to big? -We arent the only Tokio Hotel fans out there, and there are going to be heaps more joining this group as the days go by. And i'll be here to see each one go and each one come. Were a family, and should stay together :) So im not leaving.. (: xo

The previous answer is correct but probably a bit more technical than you wanted. Silver nitrate solution is used to detect Chlorine in water.
The result if chlorine is present is a milky white precipitant (a cloud like substance) that forms almost immediately.

silver nitrate is used for the detection of chloride ions and forms silver chloride(a milky white ppt).
the equation:
AgNO3 +Cl--->AgCl +NO3-
