A vernier caliper (or vernier) is a common tool used in laboratories and industries to accurately determine the fraction part of the least count division. The vernier is a convenient tool to use when measuring the length of an object, the outer diameter (OD) of a round or cylindrical object, the inner diameter (ID) of a pipe, and the depth of a hole.
They are used in the metalworking field of mechanical engineering, and in woodworking and woodturning.

Calipers are devices for measuring width or thickness. They come in many sizes and styles. You can measure the diameter of a soup can if you have a caliper with a big enough capacity (about 3 inches). A vernier caliper is a caliper that has a vernier scale. This is a sliding scale that allows you to read between the lines on the main scale, thus measuring more accurately. You don't need that to measure a soup can. The attached link has a good explanation and some pictures.
