What version of windows or microsoft office are you using?

Sometimes as you are working on an excel (or word) document, the program automatically saves a temporary version of the file. Sometimes they are hidden so you may have to go into folder options and click on show hidden files. I am not sure when these temporary files are removed to your recycle bin but it may be a good idea to change the folder options and do a search.

File with no filename Extension and displays with a file type of “File” instead of “Microsoft Excel Workbook” and have funny looking names like 7655D900 or 2CB4D900 which are hexadecimal digits were created when Excel was working on a file. Be sure to look at the datetime stamps in the directory. If you find something interesting right-click on it and open in Excel, then do a file, Save As giving it a distinctive name including the date such as Junk_7655D900_20040629.xls and you can compare it with the other file.

How to show hidden files:
---------------- -----------------------
Click to open “My Computer” and then select “View”, “Folder Options”. Select the “View” tab and then scroll down to the entry that says “Hide file extensions for known file types” and make certain it’s not checked.

If you kept saving the same work book, it overwrites your previous data so you cannot restore those written over data.

There had been many times when we do these mistakes and we have to start from scratch, all over again.

Excel keeps backup files so search your directory. (faint Do you have a portable memory card? Save it there or on a different hard drive partition next time.

I think most of us just start all over again.
