I haven't used one, but I'd suggest getting a secured credit card (you deposit money ahead of time and that's pretty much your credit limit... very similar) because these actually help you establish credit in your credit report and that's really important down the line. If you pay off in full every month (instead of working like a debit card), you can start building your credit report with a history of "paid as agreed" notes every month. Just don't go over your limit and you'll be fine. If you "train" with tools like these, you're less likely to misuse credit cards later on down the road. If you build good credit now, you'll be in a better position to get loans with good rates (APR) later on.

At walgreens, the prepaid visa card costs $4.95 and it does not have an actual card - its just a temporary credit card number that can be used over the internet or to pay bills by phone. They have an american express prepaid card where it's an actual card. i've gotten one as a gift before and used it at the mall, to get gas, to buy food, to run errands, etc.. but if you don't have enough funds in the card to pay for something it will decline so you would have to know the exact amount on the card so you can tell the cashier exactly how much you want to charge on the card.

Use it just like you would a credit card.

Most Visa prepaid cards cost $$ on top of the face value....usually $4.95-$9.95 per card.

Some cards charge you a fee each time you use it. $1-$2.

The cards do expire....some are good for 1 year but many expire in 6 months.
