the cd has to be a DVD player and be able to read the DVD format for that movie DVD.
Windows Media Player works just fine usually its disabled or removed on Windows95/98/2000/XP systems in the company office. Microsoft is 'covering' the office and home making support too difficult, even debugging. There really should be a separate product for just company offices without these extra features that can be used for entertainment causing personality issues problems at the office.
Even the hardware should be different, not many need Auto-CAD power as a spreadsheet function or phone operator function

One should have come with the computer or DVD drive. If not, I've found that a lot of DVDs have the software on the disk itself. For example, the IceAge DVD has a player that will install and play all sorts of DVDs.

Windows Media Player hasn't worked well for me.

I've used Power DVD for years, it's excellent.

Don't install the software from the DVD if you have a choice, just use Power DVD. Check around ti find it for free.

Go to your yahoo search bar and type in "free dvd software" it will bring up many results for you to choose from. I know of certain programs but due to the community guidelines I am not allowed to post that information here for you! You will need to make sure whatever software you download is compatible with your computers operating system. Good luck.

Media Player Classic v6.4.9.0
Media Player Classic is an extremely light-weight media player for Windows. It looks just like the good-old Media Player v6.4, but has lots of nice extra features.

MPC has, for instance, a built in DVD player with real-time zoom, support for AVI subtitles, QuickTime and RealVideo support (requires QT and/or Real player), and lots more.

Definitely a great replacement for the huge and clumsy Microsoft Media Players.
