I know this sounds ridiculously simplistic, but it works for me. I try very hard to remember what I was thinking about immediately before the thing I forgot. I try to pick up on the train of thought I was on and get back on the rail, so to speak. I try to remember what I was feeling, looking at, daydreaming about, everything. In essence, I try to mentally time travel back to where I was before I got lost. It's amazing how often I realize where I got off on a side track and am able to get back on the main line.

What I do is go back and repeat the action that I was performing while I was thinking it. That usually does the trick for me.
