My brother has an ear infection and he was prescribed antibiotic tablets called "Augmentin Duo Forte". The documentation says they are supposed to be swallowed rather than chewed. However, my brother is autistic and because he doesn't understand he started chewing it before he swallowed it.

What are the consequences of this?
Will the antibiotic be effective?
Will we have to give him the dose again?

Thank you in advance.

PS: I cannot ask my pharmacist at the moment because they are closed.

he'll have to chew the tablet because if he chews the tablet the tablet gets dissolved in the juices very quickly. but still, take care in future

A tablet designed to be swallowed, rather than chewed is usually meant to be dissolved in the stomach and release the contents in a steady manner. Sometimes, it's because the medicine itself is very bitter. In the first case, the effect of chewing and therefore circumventing the intended flow of medicine to the patient's system is that there'll be spikes and valleys of when the medicine is being absorbed into the system. The second case's problem is that the patient dislikes the medicine to the point of not taking the dosage. Either way, the medicinal effect is not attained.

Some tablets need to be swallowed so they break up in the stomach and not early on...
"Swallow the AUGMENTIN tablet with a full glass of water or other liquid. AUGMENTIN DUO FORTE tablets can be broken in half, but should not be chewed."

He shouldn't have chewed it...i doubt it will kill him though might do some harm. Check what the bottle says.

The consequences are that all of the medicine went right into his system at once instead of being slowly time released. One effect could be that it could upset his stomach (some people are sensitive, like me, some are not). I wouldn't redose him tonight. Call the pharmacist or doctor in the morning. They must have a solution to this problem. Many blessings.

Some meds shouldn't be chewed because it won't be absorbed into the system over the period of time that makes it most effective. I would not suggest giving another dose.

This is a 24hr Walgreens. Call the pharmacist there.

Depends on the medication what will happen. If it is not a ER/SR etc type of drug than no difference will be observed, most likely. If it is an ER/SR etc type of drug than it won't work as well.
It appears that there will be no change in the way the drug works for this drug.
On a side note, there is a chewable tablet form of Augmentin.

What should I avoid while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium?

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, stop taking this medication and call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.
