For the same reason that a jolly fat man breaks into everyone's house one night a year and eats their cookies. Also for the same reason that everyone goes indebt to give other people presents when it isn't anyone's birthday (except Jesus, and that's even not even close to the right date.)

The Platypus, which is a mammal (specifically a marsupial native to Australia) does indeed lay eggs. They don't look like the eggs you would think of; the shell is somewhat leathery rather than brittle, but it contains a developing fetus and placenta. It drove poor C. Darwin nuts.

Anyway. Easter never had anything to do with the supposed "resurrection" in any case. It was an adaptation of a pagan spring fertility festival. Why else do you think Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon in Spring? The early Christians came along and needed a way to adapt this pagan ritual to the early church, so they attached the fabled resurrection to it. It's also closely timed to the Passover, if you notice; Easter and Passover are usually within a week or so of each other.
I believe the rabbits and eggs are hold-overs from the fertility thing. Appropriate, no?

Don't take everything so seriously. Life is too short.

If there weren't an easter egg hunt, we'd never find the easter eggs.Perhaps the eggs symbolize the new life that we can find in Christ. The rabbit or hare symbolized fertility in ancient culture and perhaps symbolizes the virgin mother. I don't really know for sure, but I do like Cadburry eggs. Peeps suck!!
