Personally, I'd avoid all the craig's list, newspaper ads, internet ads suggestions. You have no idea the kind of person that is interested in the dog.
Your best bets are to find a no-kill shelter who can help you find a home for the dog. They can list the dog on their website, have it brought to adoption days, and do all the screening of potential adopters. You may have to foster the dog until she finds a home, but you'll have to do that if you try on your own.
To find some shelters to contact, try http://www.petfinder.com
If you do decide to go the self advertising route, the HSUS has some good guidelines to follow. http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/guidelines_for_finding_a_responsible_home_for_a_pet.html
Be sure to ask a fee to help weed out unscrupulous characters. If you find the right home, you can always waive the fee, or donate it to your local no-kill shelter.
Petfinder also has a classified section where you can list pets. It's just one more resource for you.
If your dog is a purebred or has a dominant breed, you should also contact a breed rescue group. The AKC lists them here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm
Good luck to you.

How can you not advertise her? It doesn't take a lot of money to make some posters for bulletin boards or find free classifieds.
Otherwise, you can surrender her to the SPCA. You might want to be careful to only let her go to a no-kill shelter, since many animal shelters euthanize dogs after they've been in there a certain length of time.

You can search the Internet to see if there is a breed rescue group in your area. They are committed to finding good homes for dogs even if they are only partly that breed and not purebred. Also, you could make up a flyer and ask local vets if you can place it on their bulletin boards. Good luck.

write hand written notes... most vets will post them in the office for the other customers to see, or contact your local humane society/SPCA. Places like Walmart have pushpin boards at the entrance for people to advertise various items.... or your local post office... check around... find that doggie a good home before it's too late!

Most newspapers will allow you to put ads in the paper for items under $50 for free. You can also try putting ads up in Petco and Petsmart, and any other place that has a board that you can put the ad up. If at all possible do not take the dog to a shelter, but if you have too take her to a no-kill shelter.

try advertising on supermarket notice boards. ask for some payment to make sure the person you are 'selling' to can afford her - dont ask for heaps, just a nominal amount. anyone dodgy wont want to pay! good luck

If it's a purebreed or looks like a purebreed then try a rescue, there are rescues for most dogs, bigger cities have rescues for other animals too, like rabbits, but i'm assuming you are talking about a dog.

Print out flyers and post them around the neighbourhood. Also, you can have free advertisement post on dogster.com and puppyfind.com.

Most towns have free little local newspapers with free Want Ads.
If you have a vet, tell him/her, and they can help you find her a good home.
