There are a wide range of things to do as a volunteer. I lead programs that tutor children at the library, package food at the food bank for the elderly and poor, enhance the visitor experience at the local museum, clean up our parks, and play with the children at our local shelter. However, there are literally hundreds of other things that can be done in your own community.

Your volunteer center can connect your with opportunities that match your interests and meet real community needs. They work with all of the different agencies and coordinate volunteers for different projects. You can likely find your volunteer center at one of the following links:

http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm

Volunteer centers can provide one-time, short-term, or long-term volunteer projects for you.

If you can't find anything there, your local United Way also specializes in volunteer placement as well:

Good luck!

Try volunteering at your local American Red Cross chapter, it is a great opportunity to help others, get involved in your community, and socialize with people of different ages that share a common goal.

I volunteer for the USCG aux. I go out on 8 hr patrols in my area with them, if you like boats and the water but, don't want the hassel of owning a boat, this is the place to be, lot's of folks who donate both their time and boats, for a good cause, we're an extra set of eyes and ear's out on the water for the Coast Guard, it's fun, and the people are great, I like my "Floatilla" because everyone fights about stupid stuff but, when the "SAR" (search And Rescue) alarm goes out, evryone pulls together like a well organized football play, and gets the job done, and done well, then we go back to fighting, LOL, what a bunch of "Knuckle heads", I would'nt want to be with ANY other people when the sh-t hits the fan !

That really depends on what you enjoy. I walked dogs at the local humane society. I worked at a community theater (maybe helps others less, but is a wonderful experience) I am now looking into being an english tutor for immigrants. I also have done Meals on Wheels that brings meals to the elderly in their homes (must be able to drive)

I'm a disabled 49 yo woman who loves to do flower gardens and pretty yards. It has now been almost 4 years since I've been past my front porch. The other day a young man, a boy really, stopped at my house and asked me the same question. I ended up signing a blank check ( and I'm sub poverty) I pay rent all my utilities, buy groceries, and take almost $4000.00 a month in medication. Anyway, my front porch is going to be beautiful. we planted wild flowers in scruffy old pots and broken things, and put them all over my porch soon he is coming back and he will move all my plants back out that I had to get someone to bring in for the winter. They are all green plants. It Made My Month, give someone that feeling and your a good person THANX
