Como Estas= How are you? Como can mean how. Also, it can mean, "what?" in a nice way. Like if someone says something you don't understand saying, "como?" is nicer than saying "que?".

You are asking how someone is. They would usually reply bien, y tu? (Good, and you?)
Use it when greeting someone. Although, if you are having a hard time with the introduction, you probably won't catch much of the convo after that.
