I flew on Pan Am when I was a kid back in 1973, from London to San Fransisco. It was by far the worst flight I've ever been on. It was crowded, the cabin smelt of baby urine and poop, and the meals were non-existent. You could only buy a stale brown bread tuna sandwich if you were getting off in SF - if you were going on to where ever it was going next, you couldn't buy any food.
IMHO, if that's the way they ran an airline, they deserved to disappear.

They went out of business probably fifteen years ago. I was a kid but I remember flying them a couple times. I also remember Eastern Airlines, they were great too but went out of business at probably the same time. It's kinda sad, they were a good airline.

Yes, they were one of the, if not *the*, first world-class airlines. Sadly though the deregulation of the late 1970s and early 1980s was not kind to them. And in any case, they were partly a victim of their own mismanagement. They were starting to make a come back when one of their planes blew up over Lockerby, Scotland. (Due to terrorist activity not mechanical failure.) Also, that guy who Leonardo DiCaprio portrays in the movie "Catch me if you Can," did his part to put a dent in their finances by writing phony checks drawn on their payroll account.
