Locally, you can goto Costco or Sam's club, they have good deals.
Keep in mind that in 2001 a 1GB CF card for $300 was considered a bargain!

Try taking off the lens. Clean the electrical contact points on the lens mount. Do not touch the glass. Reattach the lens to the camera and power on with the new CF card in place. If that didn't do it and you are sure the new CF card is compatible (same size and type as the old one) then something is mightily wrong with the camera.

Do not skimp on your memory card!!!
Get a good pro version so it's more reliable and fast.
If you lose that once in a lifetime photo, you'll know what I mean.
A good site is www.bhphotovideo.com, it's where a lot of pros go so you'll be safe.
