Brooklyn and Queens will give you much more for far less rent than Manhattan. Both boroughs have excellent neighborhoods and areas that are positively foul.

If you want easy access to Manhattan Staten Island is the cheapest rent wise. Go by the Staten Island Ferry which is very up and coming, Port Richmond, Westerleigh also have great transportation and the quickest route to get to the City. All areas have their downfalls. You have to find a real estate agent you are confident with and you trust because they will take you to some shady areas just to make a buck. You need to do research on your own. Can you get there to visit for a couple of weeks before you move? You can't honestly go by anyone's opionions when you are making such a tremendous change you need to see it for yourself. Get your hands on local newspapers to get an idea of rent, crime and safety. Staten Island Advance, New York Times, New York Post, Daily News for starters! Its not cheap so be prepared. I moved out now I am in Florida a little over a year! Good Luck to you!

It's dirt cheap to live and succeed in that city.
