Ok for starters everyone heals differently, typically a piercer will tell you it takes approximately 3-6 mos to heal before you can change the barbell. The swelling goes down in about 2-3 days but still this is different in everyone. Personally my tongue didnt swell up that much and it was completely fine the next morning.
Best thing you can do is make sure you take care of it after you get it pierced and your healing time will take as long as it does.
I suggest gargling with ice cold water 3 times a day if you swell pretty badly, and as for taking a pain reliever it probably won't work since they are meant to bring down swelling so or less it hurts really bad its not worth it.
Just follow the advice of your piercer and Good Luck.

I have been given mine finished while i became 19 and that i'm 23 now. with the aid of a techniques the biggest waste of money i've got ever spent. that is comparable to the different piercing, it hurts then its over. even nonetheless, those following couple of days are while it hurts!!! i could no longer even swallow my own spit the excellent suited way it became sooo swollen. My lips have been all chapped, it became a large number! additionally, i could no longer consume something yet soup with no longer something good in it, drink or smoke. It takes some weeks for the tongue length to flow returned to favourite. till it does, you rather lots sound and appear like an entire weirdo. So, confident it hurts for a whillllee! additionally i might guess you something in a year or so which you will seem returned and say "What became I thinking?!". I mean I definitely produce different piercings and a pair of tattoos, so i'm no longer preaching, even nonetheless it rather is an all around undesirable thought.

Uh oh I hope you dont already have your tongue pierced because you should probably have asked your piercer this. Well I just got my bellybutton pierced and it has a list of all the piercings and their healing times on the back.
It says to full heal a tongue piercing = 6 months! Good luck

mine healed in 2-3 days, the swelling never really came, and im sure if you get it done they are going to give you a long bar probably a 14 gage, which is normal and later on you can upgrade to a 12, but me personally i got my tongue pierced at 13 in my friends bathroom, and my friends got theirs done in the backseat of a car by our friend whos *brother* was a piercer, yea that was stupid but we were young and it was the cool thing to do, but i changed my barbell in the first week and nothing happened, but i did gargle with listerine, and you will get this white slimly stuff around it so you want to get a q-tip and make sure you take it off, and use listerine!! it will help it heal faster, and eating ice does help the swelling go down, and if i remember correctly getting my tongue pierced with a hollow needle didnt hurt as much getting it pierced with a thick one hurted more, or the other way around, cause i got mine done twice in two different spots, cause i thought it was cool to have one on the tip and one in the middle, but in all honesty having it isnt that great and it doesnt look that cool.... and i was in the military and i had mine out for 3 years and my hole is still there, so you could always have a hole in your tongue forever! hahaha just kidding, but your having one in makes your breath stink inthe mornings really bad, and eating with one is a little hard, caue you can bite on it, and if you have metal balls and you scrap them against your teeth it can ruin them, and i bit on mine once while eating and i chipped my tooth, and when you do eat, try eating yogurt and soft foods so you wont make your tongue swell so much by eating things you have to chew like a subway sandwhich like i did hahah but popsicles are good too instead of ice cause they taste better!!

you should wait a few weeks before changing it. the mouth is one of the fastest healing parts of the body so even after it has 'healed' you have to remember that the body sees the piercing as a wound so it will try to close it up pretty quickly if you take the bar out completely without replacing it.

Are you nuts? Haven't you got anything better to do? If you want to look like a cheap whore, go ahead and do it. They say there are more germs in the mouth than anywhere on your body. Take a chance, try to get an infection.
