Should I attach a barrel to it like in Jaws? That way I will still know where it is even if it goes underwater.

ha ha ha ha... that's funny. Actually, there are GPS devices that you can buy now for pets... never seen one myself but there's a lady here who has one on her cat and she says she knows where her cat is at any time of day and can track him no matter where he goes becuase of the device. Honestly, why not just keep kitty indoors?

Tracking devices for cats? Great. Now when the tracker indicates there has been no movement for quite some time you will know you cat has been hit by a car, ripped apart by a racooon, or poisoned by one of the hundreds of crazies out there. This will save you having to put up posters or call the lost animal shelter. What a wonderful invention.
Or maybe taking an animal and domesticating it to the point where it relies on you for food, shelter and companionship then releasing it on it's own into the world might not be the greatest idea on Earth. Not to mention all the cats that are put down every year because people are letting their cats out thereby allowing them to mate.
The only reason a cat should be an outdoor cat is if you started looking after it when it was of an advanced age and it had always been an outdoor cat. In that case it would be miserable if kept inside and would be unlikely to adjust to a completely indoor life. Of course you need to make sure it is fixed and has it's immunity shots once it becomes your charge, before you let it out. As well, if you live in a place with an enclosed yard that ensures other cats cannot get in and your cat cannot escape, you can have a very lucky indoor/outdoor cat. Still needs it's immunity shots though.
While I do understand that cats love going outside, once they are domesticated they really are not properly equipped to handle all that is out there. At least research how many cats are killed by cars, hurt, tortured, skinned or burned alive, poisoned, maimed by other animals, exposed to deadly diseases, etc. each and every day. Then take a good look at your cat and ask yourself if it's worth the risk. Remember, you are the "parent" in this relationship, and I'm assuming (I hope rightly so) that you wouldn't let your toddler wander the streets alone simply because he thinks that would be a fun things to do.

better yet, why dont you shut it in of a night, so it is safe. A few toys, a litter box, and lots of cuddles, and it wont be bothered to roam.
