Panasonic DMR-ES & (- EX ) range are all in which.net top buys. Good value, reliability, ease of use & quality output.

SONY RDR-GR310 received good press.

This is the hard drive, the same you have inside a computer. Many DVD recorders come combined with a hard drive, offering more recording space and flexibility. HDD can store recordings that are as good as broadcast TV and is as versatile as a DVD-RAM disc.

I have been researching the same thing for months. The Panasonic products win nearly every report I have seen. They are also very easy to use (unlike some Sony models).
