WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Magnificently sophisticated geometric patterns in medieval Islamic architecture indicate their designers achieved a mathematical breakthrough 500 years earlier than Western scholars, scientists said on Thursday.
By the 15th century, decorative tile patterns on these masterpieces of Islamic architecture reached such complexity that a small number boasted what seem to be "quasicrystalline" designs, Harvard University's Peter Lu and Princeton University's Paul Steinhardt wrote in the journal Science.

Is this breaking news? Medieval Muslims have always been known to make many breakthroughs in math. Didn't they invent math?

no surprise, medieval and even pre medieval arabic scholars had invented lot of things. the modern number system reached the western world through the arabian regions.

they did not invent math.
math has been with us long before the first muslim ever step its dirty feet on earth.
India invent ZERO and that was the real breakthrough.
muslim never invented any thing , not ever the suicide bomber style!
they just correct and make use of knowledge from another civilization.
