Suppose I went to church (yeah, I know, that's a stretch! LOL) and the pastor in his sermon goes on and on about how all of us are sinners, and we're not good enough for the Biblical god, and furthermore we should stop having sex.

Then, a little while later, after they've insulted me, called me names, and presumed to give me advice about my personal life, they pass a collection plate around and ask for my money.

Does anyone besides me think this takes a lot of gall?

Either you can accept the truth that sin is wrong or not. If you were insulted by what the Pastor said then it would only be because you were guilty. That is not the Pastor's fault. It's yours. GOD said to tithe not the Pastor and if you are not saved then it would not do you any good to put any money in the plate anyway.
But if you were saved and loved GOD and then you went to Church you would not feel like the Pastor was "calling you names" and you would know that GOD said that HE would open the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing your barns cannot hold. You have cheated yourself out of these blessings. Your fault.
As to your original question, it is clear that no Pastor has asked you for money or anything else so what are you whining about?

Well, what he is saying is the truth. None of us (myself included) are good enough for the Biblical God. Fortunately, He still loves us so much he wants a relationship with us.

In a church, visitors are not asked for money (or should not be asked for money). I would not attend such a church. The offering plates are passed for members to give their tithes, as commanded in the bible. Visitors are usually asked to place a paper in the plate letting the church know you were there. What information you give is up to you.
