Yes they can but it is very difficult to do, they will need to get a court order for the telephone company to release the number that made the call. There are other ways of doing this but they would need tracing software and a very high end phone tracing system that only goverment agencied have.

No, they can not trace back and get your number. But that person can also have their phone set up to not take *67 (private) numbers calls. In any case, they cannot trace back to your number. My advice is dont even bother calling them back at all. If anyone is threatening suicide, call the police and tell them. Most times the person threatening to do it, is just using it to get attention, but to be safe, call 911. You dont need to be involved with anyone you are afraid of giving your number too anyway.
Best to stay away!

I suggest you tell people who are online saying they want to commit suicide to contact a hotline for that. You should never put yourself in danger or try to counsel someone if you are not a counselor. If you hit *67, it is my understanding that they cannot trace the call. I used it a couple of times and my number did not show on their caller ID (they told me that because they didn't know it was me calling).

There are advanced tracking devices that can be used. People usually do not have access to this technology however it can fall into the wrong hands. If they do call you back call your phone company so they can block that number. If you believe there is a threat to yourself call the police. Be careful when you call others.
Best of luck to you.

My phone number always comes up private on other people's number. No, they can't trace is back with *anything if its deemed a private number.

I am sorry, I really don't know; I guess, you could call your phone company and find out. If you really are worried about that person killing themselves, you shouldn't worry about your number - the person is more important...if you really are that uncomfortable - get a bag of quarters and use a pay phone!
