I'd say a basset hound

guess it depends on your personality...chihuahuas are small but have big temperament and very active and not that good if you have got kids at home while bassets are very much on the laid back side. they are good with kids and they are very friendly.

Basset hounds drool profusely. The breed also has a predisposition for ear infections due to their long, pendulous ears. When dogs have ear trouble they tend to shake their heads which turns many basset hounds into walking doggie drool sprinklers.

One thing you have to be careful about with both basset hounds and chihuahuas is that they can both be very loud dogs. If you live in close proximity to your neighbors that could be a problem.

I have had 2 basset hounds, which I loved a lot. The first one got spinal problems and had to be put down. The second one got glaucoma, went blind, and had to be put down. They are scent hounds, and need good fencing, or they will wander off. They do massive "jobs" which have to be cleaned up. On the whole, a small chihuahua is a lot easier and less heartbreaking .

Chihuahua's can be high strung but Bassett Hound's have a terrible bark... eh, I'd pass on both... If you have a family I'd pick a retriever or lab type dog as they're very mellow and tolerant of little kids... Read up on the different types of breeds...

Remember- Always buy a dog from a reputable breeder- never a pet store- a breeder can confirm the lineage and health of a dog whereas the majority of animals in pet stores come from mills who often abuse and neglect their stock... Mills can not verify their animals lineage or guarantee their health. A reputable breeder will take a dog back if you are no longer able to care for the animal no matter how old it is, they will also provide you with another dog should your dog die within it's first year of life because of heriditary or illness or an illness that was screened for but overlooked or missed.

Best Wishes!

Ok, I know a heck of a lot about dogs so I had to answer this. Bassets are a very laid back, dare I say LAZY dog, they're content to lay around and watch tv with ya, whereas, the chihuahua, even though they're earned the rep of being a lap dog are vivacious and sometimes downright yappy. They love to be carried and get cold VERY easy. Bassets require a lot of cleaning because of their folds and can become offensive and foul smelling if not cleaned regularly. So, in essence, I'd say it depends largely on your preferences and lifestyle. Happy choosing! :-D

my neighbor who is also a friend has a basset and he is so annoying. he barks all the time, jumps on everyone, slobbers on everything, chews on everything, and poops and pees all over the house even though he is outside alot. he is however the only one i have ever been around and just may be a turd and not typical of the breed. i am a chihuahua lover. only bad thing i can think of about them is they become very protective of the owner. but i really don't think this is a bad thing just most people do. i would go for the chi. but that's just me!!

Before you get either, please do a lot of research on both breeds, so you know what you are getting.

Personally, I would go with the Bassett hound. They are easier to train, more laid back and mellow, but they tend to have back problems, and also get overweight easily, so you have to be careful not to overfeed them and that they get adequate exercise.

Chihuahua's (i love them and have a chi) do tend to be highstrung and a one or two person dog. Well socialized at an early age, they can be friendly to both other animals and outside people, but still tend to be a bit yappy ... a great watch dog to alert you. However ... they are difficult to train, including house training, and as they get older, tend to become un-housetrained.

Again, do your homework and read up on both breeds, and perhaps other breeds as well.
