Actually there are some very big differences. And not so minor either.

First one that comes to mind is Lutherans believe in what is called "cosubstatiation" and that is that the Communion is a symbol of Christs body and blood. Catholics believe in 'transubstantiation' and that is we believe that the Host (Communion) is absolutely and truly the Body and Blood of Christ that occurs during consecration.

2. Lutherans do not believe in confession. Catholics believe in confession to a priest.

3. Lutherans appreciate Our Mother, but they do not give her the great honor that is due Her as Catholics do.

4. The issue of Papal authority. They do not recognize the Pope as the Vicar of Christ on Earth.

5. Martin Luther 'founded' the Lutheran Protestant sect. Catholics believe completely that the Church that Christ gave teh keys of the kingdom to is the Catholic church. To subcatergorize this: We believe that the Mystical Body of Christ -- the nation of priests and kings, Israel, the Church -- is of three parts:
a)the Church Militant: Christians on earth, the "Historical Church"; b)the Church Suffering: Christians in Purgatory where they are being cleansed before standing before God (also called the "Church Purificatory"); and
c)the Church Triumphant: Christians in Heaven

6. Priesthood.

Though many think that Lutherans and Catholics are similiar we are not. We MAY share liturgical vestment colors, same Creed...we are a totally different entity. If you wish to look among those which are "Protestant" and close to Catholicism you look no further than Anglicans or in US I think they're called Episcopalians. Their Low Masses are quite beautiful, reverent, however not techincally 'valid' as far as the consecration.

The Lutheran Church was "founded" by Martin Luther in Germany in 1532. He was a Catholic monk who started having problems with the corruption of the Catholic Church.

The biggest difference between the two churches if the fact that Catholics are taught the Bible should and can only be interpreted by the Pope. Luther said the Bible should be read by everyone who can read. Those who can read should be teaching the meaning of the Bible to those who can't.

The secnd biggest difference is the belief in the way we are saved. Luther said we are saved by God's Grace, not by the purchasing of salvation through the church. The Catholic Church doesn't belive we are saved by Grace as much as we are saved by being Catholic.

I don't know what the connection to Luther KIng the Lutheran Church has, but I do know he was not the foundewr of the Lutheran Church.

Having the Pope as the head of the church is probably the primary one.

The importance put on the Virgin Mary is another.

Most of the old differences which split the church 500 years ago have been resolved. The Roman Catholics, most Lutherans and Episcopalians use almost exactly the same liturgy in the service.

they're the two closest to a minimum of one yet another, a minimum of while in comparison with any Protestant sect and Catholicism. Recogition of the primacy of the Pope as chief of the church, of direction. The sacrament of Reconciliation, as nicely. unsure with reference to the situation of the saints. some Lutheran ministers have a valid declare to the Apostolic succession, the unbroken chain of inferring of Holy Orders upon ordination that stretches decrease back to the Apostles.

Lutherans believe in the teachings of Martin Luther, who spearheaded the Reformation. In other words, Lutherans are Protestant and Catholics are, well, Catholic.
