just a way of covering up the finality of life? A way in which to make life seem important and actually useful/worthwhile/controlling, whilst removing/surpressing our so called 'crocodile mind' to the gallows?

Discuss!

People can be motivated towards looking for religious explanations due to fears of death and meaninglessness of life.

But thats a different issue to whether the religious ideas discussed are correct or not.

In the bible, there doesn't seem to be much explicit hope about life after death until quite late on. I haven't read the Old Testament completely, but think there's little if anything on life after death until the Psalms. Even today Jewish people are more keen on making the most of this life, and vague about the afterlife. In Jesus' ministry of course the issue is greatly explored - but you can examine what the gospels say and see if it makes sense or not. Did Jesus rise from the dead? The testimony and experience of the Church says yes.

Possibly - many people do fear death and what, if anything, comes after it. But I think religion is also a way for leaders to try and keep us under control. Problem is that the more intelligent of us realise it's all make believe and life is important in it's own right - we don't need a reason to live, we just live!

as we evolved and gained understanding, reasoning and the ability to foresee(as in seasons drout floods starvation and death)we needed to know why and as we could see no way to control all of these we also needed a way to.so jst as a child turns to its parents for whys and wherefors help protection and reasurance man needed this.the aid needed to be far greater than human to control such forces that can change the seasons.so looked to the sky for scope, its where the sun and weather lies.there man found his answer and all see being with 360 view that couldnt be spoken to or by directlyso far away,so when things were asked for they would look for signs like healing or weather changes.sometimes these things happened as sometimes they do and it would be taken as crys acted on.though sometimes death or bad weather remained as indeed often occurs, and inorder to accept and move on still needing an answer.Choose to say God knows best and had a reason so we dont always need to know.just like with parents who sometimes have to say mummy/daddy knows best because the child is too young to know.with faith and trust and love for its parents the child is able to function not needing an explanation any more its parents are sorting it out. Added to that to ease the loss of loved ones Is to believe its not forever and then it only becomes a wait until they are reunited. This helps in the grieving process needed to be shed in order to function and feed.So god is the ultimate in imaginary friends to turn to when you need an answer or reason and wether you recieve them or not youre pain has been lessened by passing it on to the one ready to recieve your troubles, even more in death which fears most they created a god with a kingdom big enough for all to go in.Theres a major flaw to this way of offloading burdens to enormous to carry why an earth why not cut it out so in turn the suffering and go straight tothe one who loves them, well only god knows the answer to that but again hes not quite ready to speak out.

The scriptures and faith help to explain the meaning of life. It's not about suppressing anything, in fact it is about liberating us from darkness. See for yourself.

No not at all. I have felt the presents of the Lord since I was a young child. If you doubt him you will never experience it.

I think religion is our attempt to understand and try to communicate with a higher being that we sense and of whom we see evident in nature
