And if not, what is the purpose for denominations? If the original message of Jesus is what is important, why do christians split themselves up based on trivial things?

Hmmm. I remember being taught that Catholics weren't headed to heaven since they asked a priest for forgiveness, rather than Jesus himself. And the other denominations MIGHT get in, but it was shaky. Now OUR denomination was definitely headed for heaven, no questions. Heh.

I'm not Christian anymore.

For many it will, for some it will not. The basic concept is that God tries to lead every person to be saved, but gives only enough new light to keep drawing them in the right direction toward a closer walk with Him. Apparently some denominations provide the best place for some people at key points in their walk even though that denomination does not have the most truth. If a person lives up to all they know and accepts all new light as it is given to them that person even in a denomination that does not have as much truth as another denomination, can be saved.

The person that chooses to belief a lie even when the truth is presented to them, that person might be lost.

Salvation is based on the individual's relationship with Jesus Christ, not on what denomination they belong. Some denominations have more truth and less lies than others. The ones that follow most closely to the Bible have the most truth. The ones that follow tradition instead of the Bible are the ones to stay away from.

In the early 1500s, a German monk named Martin Luther was so conscious of his sins that he spent up to six hours in the confessional. Through study of the Scriptures he found that salvation didn’t come through anything he did, but simply through trusting in the finished work of the cross of Jesus Christ. He listed the contradictions between what the Scriptures said and what his church taught, and nailed his "95 Theses" to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Martin Luther became the first to "protest" against the Roman church, and thus he became the father of the Protestant church.

Since that split, there have been many disagreements about how much water one should baptize with, how to sing what and why, who should govern who, etc., causing thousands of splinter groups. Many of these groups are convinced that they alone are right. These have become known as Protestant "denominations."

Despite the confusion, these churches subscribe to certain foundational beliefs such as the deity, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible says, "The foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his" (2 Timothy 2:19). Thomas Jefferson once wrote of a preacher, Richard Mote, who "exclaimed aloud to his congregation that he did not believe there was a Quaker, Presbyterian, Methodist, or Baptist in heaven, having paused to give his hearers time to stare and to wonder. He added that, in heaven, God knew no distinctions."

Denominations typically developed out of a context of disagreement where the attitude of I'm right and you're wrong ruled the day. In essence, denominations are simply divisions and have no bearing or affect on the after-life.

Of course we don't.
As for denominations,we are told in the Bible that it's okay to have different opinions on trivial matters. That's why different denominations arose.
There is no animosity between the denominations,it's not like we are in a feud. We're not spitting up because we're angry at each other.

Churches usually split because of heretics spreading hate and discord. They lack the faith to encourage love and unity. The Apostles all had differences yet they maintained the ability to put aside their differences and bring them to the cross.Sad to say that many of the weak fall because of the confusion brought about in the churches today.I have been guilty of these things my self in the past and have asked God to forgive me.

Wow, Serena.

You must be totally unaware of history. Entire wars have been fought between the different sects of Christianity.

If you truly think there is no animosity between the different denominations of Christianity, then you must also not have noticed how "Christians" act towards each other on here.

It's not the denomination of a church that gets you to heaven. it's being washed in the Blood of the Lamb (Christ Jesus), and your faith, not your church membership, not your baptism, and not your works. Don't let anyone deceive you by false doctrines.

No. All humans have finite minds. No one knows anything absolutely...
A religious denomination is just a set of ideas that you like.
It is like buying a car, you don't try to buy the "truest car", rather you buy the car you like the best...
