I have an underbite and a crossbite which, according to my dentist and formerly orthodontist, would require an expensive surgery with a painful recuperation. My jaw also pops and naturally shifts slightly when i yawn, etc. They said it would be best to get it while I'm young but after I'm done growing. I think I'm now ready for the surgery but I'm worried about two things. One, how long does it take to recover? And two, what is the likelihood of me being permenantly messed up with TMJ disorder or something?

I've not had to have the operation, but a friend of mine has. It took him about one month to totally recover... But, now he's alright and there aren't really any big problems. Good luck!

yeah i was supposed to have this procedure done, but like you i was told to wait untill i stopped growing. well in that time i my orthodontist's building burned down and i had to go to a new one. with this new orthodontist the procedure was suggested but they also gave me some new options. they told me the operation would only mean one night in a hospital and a few weeks of minor swelling. i ended up getting out of it with another appliance, but im glad i got a second opinion.
