We try to keep strings out of reach. If you turn your back for a second and don't put your shoes away they are as good as gone. He is the most active of all of my cats and he plays a lot. Ok I forgot to mention we just got roomates and they have only chewed one pair of their laces and like ten of mine. He is also not eating the strings whole he really chews them into little peices before eating.

Try soaking the laces/strings with something nasty tasting, we used to get the nail biting deterent, it's like a clear nail polish you can get from a drug store, that stays on a long time and is really difficult to get the taste from your mouth, it stopped our dogs from chewing up stuff.

Try making the blind strings as short as possible so that kitty can't reach them. Don't leave shoes laying around either. If any thing like string, twine, etc gets wrapped around her intestines it's a costly and painful operation to get it removed. They also have cat repellents that you can buy at pet stores. They have a real strong smell and do work very well to deter kitty from doing things like this. The repellent has to be used every 24 hours tho in order to teach the cat to stay away. The scent wears off after 24 hours. If you use a spray bottle of water. Make sure the nozzle is set on stream and aim for the face. Cat's hate water, especially in their faces. Use a strong, stern voice as well while you are spraying kitty. I hope this advise helps in your situation. Good luck!

When I don't want my cat to chew or even take a taste of something, I rub that something with ordinary table pepper - just the smell of it totally turns off overly curious kitties. Spice up the shoelaces and blind strings. Kitty will keep away from them and anything string-like - smells and tastes aweful!

Cats & Dogs, kittens & puppies are babies that don't really ever grow up. You have to follow them around, maybe on your knees like a real mom, and see what they could get into. Like with babies, you need to be the one to make sure things are not accessible that could hurt them, or ruin your shoes etc... You would be surprised what they can eat or just chew on. Plastic bags, paper, shoe laces, cords, twist ties, bobby pins, paper clips..... you have to monitor your home. Plain and simple. Yes, it can cost you a lot of money and grief if you don't.

Water has an effect on some behaviour, but then water can damage wood furniture, certain fabrics. I think being proactive is easier. JMO...

My cat plays with the blind strings too. Try a thumbtack and hang the strings above the window. The cat can no longer reach them.

As for the shoelaces, tuck the laces inside the shoes and get a shoe rack for you closet.

Both of these are favorites of all cats and easily remedied.

There is really no good trick to solve this problem other than adjusting the environment, in other words, keep strings out of reach, or you can end up with a 1000.00 Dollar vet bill or worse, loose your cat. Except if you have lots and lots of free time, you can follow your cat and create a negative experience every time the cat touches laces etc.(big noise, water pistol, etc.). Good luck, A.

Try getting a cat toy that looks like what you described and try playing with your cat. This behavior could be caused by inactivity and your cat may be bored some breeds of cats are more active than others. Not all cats are like Garfield.

My cat likes the strings on the blinds too. I stuffed the strings into a small sock and put the sock on top of the frame.
