Shoot it

My advise is to put him on a strong lead that is secure and strong enough to keep the dog from escaping your yard. Go to a pet store and look for strong leads, whether they be chain or other materials. They also have things that look like a big cork screw with a handle on top. These screw into the ground and the lead is attached to it. Don' t let him out without a alone or without some kind of lead. Or, you could also get a kennel for outside. It's a cage for dogs, and is a good way to keep your dog safe. It might be a good idea too to put a choke chain on him as well as his collar. Those can also be found at pet stores and come in many different sizes. The stores sales people will be very helpful on picking out some thing to restrain your dog with and also for fitting him with the right size choke chain. You didn't give any details on what kind of dog you have or how big he is. So, I hope this helps.

Under what circumstances does he run away? I have a fenced yard and a determined dog will bolt. There are lots of methods available. I'd start with some beginning obedience training; Keep him in an enclosure (crate) when you aren't home; I've had a few foster dogs that occasionally are smart enough to get out by climbing over a chain link fence. I'd walk the dog all around the neighborhood so he can get the smells that will lead him home.

I have Siberian Huskies and they are born to run. Lucky for me the two current ones do not try to get out of the yard but my first one would climb the fence like a ladder and take off. Once he was gone for three days before he came home. After that I put in a cabled dog run. It would allow him to roam the yard to about 30 feet but that was it. I made sure he had plenty of slack since I came home one night to find him standing with his paws on the fence, because he had jumped the fence and the cable got caught and he was forced to stand or choke. He could of hung himself. That was the only time I ever had a problem. Bought the longer lead and he was fine.

A leash or chain would be the obvious answers. However an invisible electric fence would work too. A cheaper way to go would be a shock collar controled by remote control. as soon as the dog crosses into where you don't want him give him a shock that will teach him. worked great for me. It's the same as an invisible fence but much cheaper.

this is easy....you just have to show your dog that your the pack leader. it might take a while but here is a good exercise that i do with my dogs (2 pitbulls so you know they can be running out with their reputation). soooo here is the exercise find a door whether its from your back yard to the front yard or from inside of your house to the outside, put your dog on a leash and open the door usually a dog would try and drag you out the open door so too correct that and his problem (with the door open) you make your dog sit until your ready. then YOU walk the dog out the door making sure they stay next too you and not infront of you.(if he trys to lead snap back on the leash then relax) so after you feel comfortable and confident, and he doesnt try to drag you out a open door, make him sit in front of an open door while you walk out making sure he doesnt try to follow you out, if he trys to follow snap your fingers and move forward to show your dominance. after a while you'll be able to open doors and they will wait for your signal to walk out....it might take a while but it will work. too make things a will easier take your dog on a long walk to get it tired before the exercise. remember to stay relaxed and dont get frustrated..hope this helps!!

I had a beautiful brindle boxer that did that and I kept saying "We have GOT to break her. One of these days she is going to get hit by a car." And sure enough she got hit by a car. It was a terrible experience! You have got to break her. How? the only way I know of is an invisible fence with a shock collar. I know it seems cruel but it may save your dogs life one day. And he/she will only get shocked a few times before it learns to stop.

Your dog thinks he's in control and you have to show him wrong, that you are in control. when he is acting bad don't be afriad to take the toy away from him. don't treat him like a baby and show that you are in control. this will show that your the dominant and he'll listen to you, that's how to tame him under your thumb.

Sorry to tell you, but if a dog is a runner, it's almost impossible to keep him from taking off. Best thing is to keep him indoors.
